High-Pressure Cylinder Maintenance
Cylinders are required to be tested and recertified every five or ten years depending on the type of cylinder, and we can take the hassle out of this process with our hydrostatic and ultrasonic inspection services. Our hydrostatic inspection includes an expansion test, internal and external visual inspection, cleaning, and valve replacement.
We offer ultrasonic inspection as a preferred testing method for high-end specialty gas cylinders as content doesn't have to be drained. Ultrasonic tests are highly accurate and they measure the thickness of the cylinder walls to make sure they meet requirements as well as identify any small problems such as cracks or corrosion.
How Often Your Cylinders Need Testing
Most steel cylinders are on a 5-year hydrostatic retest cycle, while certain DOT-exempt and composite cylinders qualify for a 10-year interval. We check your cylinder's stamped test date and spec during intake so you're not guessing which schedule applies before a job gets held up by an expired cylinder.
Hydrostatic vs. Ultrasonic
| Method | Best For | What It Involves |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrostatic Testing | Standard steel cylinders | Expansion test, internal and external visual inspection, cleaning, and valve replacement. |
| Ultrasonic Testing | High-end specialty gas cylinders | Measures wall thickness without draining cylinder contents; detects cracks or corrosion. |

Frequently Asked Questions
How often do gas cylinders need to be recertified?
Most steel cylinders require retesting every 5 years; some specialty and composite cylinders qualify for a 10-year interval. We confirm which applies based on your cylinder's specification and stamped test date.
What's the difference between hydrostatic and ultrasonic cylinder testing?
Hydrostatic testing pressure-tests the cylinder and requires it to be emptied first. Ultrasonic testing measures wall thickness without draining the cylinder, making it a suitable method for high-end specialty gas cylinders.
What happens if my cylinder fails inspection?
A cylinder that fails hydrostatic or ultrasonic testing can't be refilled or returned to service. We'll walk you through replacement options so a failed cylinder doesn't hold up your job.
